Christmas Match 30th November 2025
Grand Western Canal

The club's annual Xmas match held on Sunday was well supported once again, with 62 anglers in attendance. The match was split into 3 sections- Basin, Tidcombe and Manley with the prizegiving held at Amory Park bowls club afterwards.

   Winner of the Basin section, and top weight overall, was Martin Heard from peg 5 in the bay with 3.120kg. Martin fished a long pole and caught two good sized skimmers in the first half of the match using punch over liquidised bread along with lots of small roach. He later fished squatt over a little ground bait and managed a small tench together with half a dozen perch caught on the worm. Big congrats Martin on a fine win ! Runner up from peg 14 was Dan Baldwin with 2.750kg which included a good 3lb pike on worm. Cheers Dan ! 

  Section B at Tidcombe was won by Les Poldon from peg 38 by the holly bush with 2.940kg.Les fished a 6mm punch over liquidise mainly down the track at 7m and caught small roach steadily throughout the match. He did have 3 bonus skimmers to complete a great day. Well done Les !  Runner up from peg 22 by the wires was Steve Manley with 2.250kg. Steve had lots of roach plus several good skimmers on bread, Nice one Steve !

   In section C and Manley, it was Bruce Hunt who came out on top with 2.850kg from peg 58 up at Manley bends. Bruce fished a 3mm whip using an 8mm punch fished hard on the bottom over licky and caught small roach from the off. He later switched to a 9m pole and continued in the same vein catching, in total, 182 fish. Great result Buce ! Runner up from peg 47 was Russ Hilton with 187 fish plus a small pike. Russ fished a small punch off bottom using a short whip as well as pole to middle. Again, well done Russ !

   Big thanks goes to Phil, our Match Secretary as well as everyone who helped to make this yet another enjoyable Xmas match. Special thanks to Julie and Alistair for amassing all the superb range of prizes and also Julie and Lyn for the catering. Also thanks to Mike and Anth for their help on the day with some great photos and in selling masses of draw tickets. Finally, grateful thanks to Julie and Steve at the Canal Tea Rooms !
