Christmas Match 24th November 2024
Grand Western Canal

The club's highly anticipated canal Xmas match was well down on numbers thanks to Storm Bert; indeed only 44 of the 54 anglers that had bought tickets actually braved the elements on Sunday and who could blame them. The Manley section had to be switched on the morning due to a fallen tree but thankfully, the horrendous wind eased later in the morning to at least make conditions a little easier for presenting a float.

The match was split into 3 sections which stretched out along the canal from the Basin to Glebelands and considering the poor conditions, the match fished well with both bream and roach showing throughout. Top weight on the day from peg 1 in the Basin was Calvin Lemon with 13.950kg. Calvin used a 14.5m pole to the far bank with double red maggot on a size 14 Acolyte barbless hook fished over chopped worm and caught a dozen bream/skimmers plus a few bits. He topped up every now and again when bites eased off. Big congrats to Calvin for a great win !

Runner up on the day from peg 20 near the footbridge was ChrisParr with 7.600kg. Chris fished a whip to the middle and had around 20 skimmers in various sizes all caught on bread punch over liquidise. Superb result Chris, well done !

3rd spot went to Ian Williams on peg 13 near School bay with 5.900kg. Ian caught most of his skimmers and roach in the first 2 hours on bread punch over licky with only a few small bits had in the last 3 hours. He found it best using 8mm punch on a 16 hook to 0.09 bottom.

Well done Ian, lovely catch !

4th place went to Dom Garnett on peg 17 with 4.000kg. Dom kicked off with a 3lb bream first cast caught on 6mm punch down the middle followed by 4 more good skimmers in the next 2 hours. Clincher was a 2lb hybrid caught on double pinkie on the far bank over ground bait. Hooks were Kamasan B511 size 18 to 0.08 bottom for punch and a 16Guru  LGWF to 0.11 for worm/pinkie. Well done, fine catch Dom !

5th spot went to breadhead Paul Elworthy from peg 40 at Tidcombe with 3.700kg. Paul fished the punch at 11m over licky and caught 10 skimmers, biggest to 2lb and 2 big roach each weighing 1.5lb. He completed the catch with around 30 small roach. Really well done Paul from an unfancied peg !
